Technology - Data integration

The rapid development of techniques for generating high-throughput data which has been achieved in recent years in areas such as DNA and oligonucleotide arrays, protein-protein interaction or mass spectroscopy technologies is giving scientists the opportunity to describe and model complex diseases, their development, progression and pathogenesis. The integration of different data types generated with various experiments is the key to unleashing the full potential of new technologies.

For many years, MicroDiscovery has been developing know-how on the integration of biomedical data. This method is being applied and enhanced in several different projects. One example in the BMBF-funded NGFN project titled `Platform technology - functional proteomic analysis of the human brain`.

Platform technology - functional proteomic analysis of the human brain

The aim of the human brain proteome project is to characterize brain proteomes in humans and mice as a model system, and to use this data (protein profiles, mRNA profiles, protein/protein interactions, protein modifications and localizations identified, targets validated) to identify mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease progression. In order to achieve this, the activities of the project have to be coordinated and all the project partners must have access to all the data and technologies.

In its capacity as bioinformatics coordinator for the project, MicroDiscovery is not only in charge of handling data transfer between the participants, but is also responsible for the development of suitable methods of data integration and data standards. The company also has the task of implementing data mining tools and analysing the data generated.
